Major projects in the regeneration of the waterfront

The projects shown in the timeline are highlights from our complete Project listings, and help to tell the story of the Clyde Waterfront regeneration. The projects are shown in the year when they were completed (for past projects) or the year of expected completion (beyond 2014).

2001 - 2005
  • 200 Broomielaw

    Completed in 2005, 200 Broomielaw enjoys a prominent riverside location. Inside, the development enjoys light, air and space. Outside, a monumental sandstone tower encased in a sweep of curtained glass wall mirrors the sweep of the river.

  • 6 Atlantic Quay

    At the heart of Glasgow's International Financial Services District (IFSD), the 6 Atlantic Quay building was completed in 2003 and provides 80,000ft² of grade A office space.

  • Clyde View Park

    The first new park to be built in the West of Scotland for many years, Clyde View Park features fountains, paths, cycleways, play areas, picnic areas, artwork, green space and a riverside walkway. It has been designed to encourage natural wildlife, and flora and fauna.

  • Glasgow Science Centre

    A £1 million addition to the Glasgow Science Centre is the stunning new entrance, complete with LED feature wall and new 500m2 corporate events space called The Atrium.

  • Sentinel

    Situated in the heart of Glasgow's International Financial Services District (IFSD), The Sentinel provides 85,000ft² of highly specified office accommodation.

  • St Andrew's suspension bridge

    During 2005, the St Andrew's suspension bridge was given a fresh coat of paint. This enhanced the works carried out in 1997, when the parapets and timber decking were replaced and the ornamental cast iron features of the Corinthian columns refurbished.

2006
  • Aurora

    The  high specification city centre office accommodation extends to 176,982ft² over ground and nine upper floors. Aurora recently scooped the British Council for Offices' Award for Best Commercial Workplace in Scotland.

  • Broomielaw public realm IFSD phase 1

    This scheme is designed to complement and enhance the commercial, leisure and residential developments underway in the International Financial Services District (IFSD).

  • Clyde Arc

    The Clyde Arc, also known as the Finnieston Bridge or the 'squinty' bridge, is the first new surface level road bridge to cross the River Clyde since 1969 and is a key infrastructure component in the continued development of Pacific Quay.

  • Crowne Plaza Glasgow

    During 2006, a multi-million poun drefurbishment was carried out, upgrading all bedrooms, public areas including the restaurant and bar, and the hotel's 15 meeting and conference rooms. A Club Lounge was also added on the 15th floor with stunning Clyde views.

  • Pipeline development centre

    The specialist centre at Old Kilpatrick has been specifically created to design, develop and test welding techniques for the gas and oil industries.

  • Xscape

    As well as a real snow slope, Xscape includes an Odeon multiplex cinema, indoor bowling, two climbing walls, an aerial assault course, bars, restaurants and shops.

2007
  • 4 Atlantic Quay

    The building is part of the successful Atlantic Quay development, which has already seen over 500,000ft² of space built. Numerous amenities are located nearby and the development enjoys easy access to motorway links.

  • BBC Scotland headquarters

    The BBC's new Scottish headquarters building is located at Pacific Quay and is a lynchpin for the development of the Digital Media Quarter. The 34,000m² broadcast centre was completed and fully occupied in 2007, creating a benchmark in terms of state of the art technology, production methods and public access.

  • Clydebank College

    Clydebank College is one of the largest further education colleges in the west of Scotland with over 10,000 students. The new building incorporates modern engineering and construction workshops, highly equipped science labs, advanced sporting facilities, a commercial hairdressing salon and a conference suite.

  • Glasgow Harbour phase 1

    Altogether 650 apartments, duplexes and penthouses have been built within this phase, all of which have either a waterfront or park land view.

  • Titan Clydebank

    Clydebank's A-listed Titan Crane has been refurbished as a visitor attraction and major local landmark. The crane was originally designed by Sir William Arrol, for Clyde shipyards, and is one of 4 remaining on the River Clyde.

2008
  • BAE Systems Surface Ships

    Recent work at the BAE Systems yard at Govan included the creation of a new East Quay to an area of around 1,150m2.  The works also included the creation of a new Transfer Quay area  and the development of a new external hard-standing.

  • Canal bridge canopy

    The new canopy over  the Forth and Clyde Canal in Clydebank Town Centre. which is designed as a swan in flight is part of the link up of the town centre with the regenerated Queens Quay, the former John Brown shipyards site.

  • Medius

    Medius at the Digital Media quarter was designed to attract media companies, and offers high specification accommodation with the most up-to-date broadband optical fibre connectivity.

  • Pacific Quay pontoon

    The project created a new pontoon that is 50m in length, with a bridge to the quay wall. The pontoon is serviced by electricity and water as well as navigation lights.

  • Springfield Quay

    Scotland's biggest casino, Alea, has opened at Springfield Quay in Glasgow. The venue, owned by Las Vegas-based gambling giant Harrah's, is the sixth casino in the city and will employ around 180 staff.

  • Travelodge, Braehead

    The new Travelodge provides 9 rooms to complement other leisure facilities at the £71m Xscape leisure complex at Baehead in Renfrew. The project creates 25 new jobs.

  • Briggait redevelopment

    A former fishmarket, the Briggait was redeveloped into a shopping centre in the 1980s, but now has been refurbished to provide creative space in the heart of the Merchant City

  • Broomielaw-Tradeston bridge ('Squiggly Bridge')

    The new bridge is ideally positioned to act as a catalyst for investment, promote confidence in the city and have a fundamental role in the river's regeneration. It connectsTradeston and the International Financial Services District and provides a focus for activities and events, promoting Tradeston as a new urban quarter.

  • Capella

    Capella at Atlantic Quay and is not only the tallest building in the Broomielaw, but also the largest at over 110,000sq ft. The ground floor includes 4,700 sq ft of retail and leisure space - a first for new builds within the area.

  • Littlemill

    This modern development of 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments has been built on the site of Little Mill distillery in Bowling. The stylish apartments are within easy reach of the A82 and Glasgow Airport and just 5 minutes walk from local bus and rail links.

  • Porsche

    One of the largest Porsche Centres opened at Braehead  following a multi-million pound investment by Sytner. The 2 storey facility features a unique car lift, 12 bay workshop and a glass covered atrium where the full range of new and Porsche approved used cars are displayed.

  • The Hub at Pacific Quay

  • Trongate 103

  • Centenary House

    At 77,000ft2 this city centre speculative development will be of interest as a corporate headquarters, or may attract a number of tenants to different floors.

  • Central Govan action plan

    Central Govan Action Plan aims to turn around the fortunes of Central Govan by investing in its streets, buildings, public and green space. The plan contains  new mixed tenure residential development; public realm improvements; restoration and reuse of historic buildings; the creation of new and improved business, commercial and community space.

  • Grand Central Hotel

    The hotel re-opened in September 2010 under the new name of 'The Grand Central Hotel' with 210 bedrooms, 20 meeting rooms and a function room for up to 500 delegates. On the first floor, a new champagne bar overlooks the Central Station concourse.

  • Indigo Hotel

    A new boutique hotel is planned for the site of Glasgow's first ever power station. Hotel Indigo will cost £11.5 million, employ 70 staff and be situated in a converted Victorian block in the heart of the city's financial services district.

  • Renfrew Health and Social Work Centre

    The new 3-storey building provides a modern, flexible, spacious and practical centre with a strong iconic civic presence. It brings together 3 GP Practices and other health and social work services, all under one roof.

  • St Enoch Centre

    The redevelopment of the St Enoch Centre has created a world-class retail and leisure destination in a key location at the heart of Glasgow city centre. In the first phase of redevelopment 250,000 ft2 of retail and leisure space has been added, taking the facility to more than 1 million ft2 in total.

  • Dobbies Garden World Braehead

    The garden centre retail development will incorporate a restaurant, café and farm food hall. The development will create approximately 120 new full and part time jobs across a wide range of employment types.

  • M74 - M8 interchange

    The M74 completion project is the missing link between the end of the M74 at Fullarton Road Junction near Carmyle and the M8 motorway west of Kingston Bridge near Glasgow city centre. The junction connecting the M74 with the M8 lies in the Clyde Waterfront area.

  • Riverside Museum

    The much-acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid created the design for the Riverside Museum which will provide a new home for Glasgow's transport collection. The new museum will open in early summer 2011.

  • Ferry Village - Miller

    The Miller development is part of the massive project at Ferry Village, which will create a whole new community of 2000 plus properties - including apartments, villas, townhouses and penthouses.

    This development is in an extremely prominent site location as it marks the entry into the designated conservation area of Central Govan.     This commercial property development in Hope Street involved connecting two existing buildings to create 65,000 sq ft of high quality Grade A open plan office space in Glasgow City Centre.

  • Laboratory and facilities management building

    The £90 million cost on the new laboratory includes £75 million build costs and £15 million for equipment and fittings. The laboratory is part of the £842 million publicly funded New South Glasgow Hospitals which will see an integrated children's and adult hospital built on the site, the gold standard for healthcare.

  • The SSE Hydro

    Created by world-renowned architects Foster and Partners, who also designed the SECC's Clyde Auditorium, Scotland's new National Arena will seat 12,000and will be the largest entertainments venue in Scotland - and the only one of its scale in the UK built specifically for concerts, conferences and events.

  • Templeton on the Green

    Templeton on the Green is a unique mixed use 'lifestyle village' overlooking the historic Glasgow Green. The buildings are being converted within an approved masterplan to provide offices, workshops, creative studios and new and converted flats. The buildings overlooking the Green will become spacious apartments.
