Location:
Greater Govan & Glasgow Harbour, Linthouse
Description:
Part of the new South Glasgow Hospital campus, the new laboratory accommodates blood sciences, pathology, genetics, microbiology, postmortem and mortuary services. The laboratory will be linked to the new adult and children's hospitals via an underground tunnel.
Once fully operational, 700 staff will be based at the laboratory.
The new Facilities Management accommodation provides the FM management hub for the campus and the underground tunnel will provide a link for the robotics (automated guided vehicles) to deliver supplies to, and remove waste from, the new hospitals.
A total of 189 new jobs have been created with the new lab alone, which will serve a population of over a million. Almost 60% of these jobs have gone to new entrants with 25% of staff in the 16-24 age bracket. The lab covers 25,000 square meters and is more than five storeys high.
