Models of structures

Develop a knowledge and understanding of structures focusing on cantilever cranes and in particular focus on the 100 year old A-listed 'Clydebank Titan' crane. Using this k/u of this structure, design and make a model of their own cantilever crane from K'nex material, with moving parts and demonstrate its purpose and use to an invited audience of peers, community and business.

Broad Outcomes of learning

• Knowledge and understanding of 'River uses' theme gained and enhanced
• Knowledge and understanding of the purpose and use of cantilever cranes enhanced through an exploration of the Clyde's shipbuilding past
• Scientific knowledge and enquiry skills enhanced through design technology
• Improved skills, knowledge and understanding of designing and making through interactivity with their peers
• Employability skills enhanced - application of knowledge in a real situation by working in pairs to investigate, design and build a working cantilever crane from K'nex material
• Employability skills developed: communication, planning, organisation, time management, budgeting, researching, presenting, sourcing information, co-operating, contributing, problem solving
• Demonstration of knowledge through presenting ideas, designs and demonstration of working model to an audience
• Confidence of working independently from teacher-led lessons demonstrated through collaborative group work
• Pupils take responsibility for their learning through cooperative decision making in design pairs

Relevance to curriculum

• Supports CfE Technology
• Relevance of how design technology is relevant to work and life and how this subject knowledge is put into practice in a real situation
