Location

Greater Govan & Glasgow Harbour, Glasgow Harbour

Type

Current

Description

The new museum will replace the Museum of Transport currently located at the Kelvin Hall. The development will be built on a site where the River Clyde meets Glasgow’s other main river, the Kelvin, and will be adjacent to Glasgow Harbour, a private-sector led mixed-use development extending to 120 acres.

The Riverside Museum project will be funded by Glasgow City Council, with bids being made for external support to a number of agencies including the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The new museum will house collections not normally on display at the Museum of Transport, and for the first time allow the proper interpretation of Glasgow's important maritime history.

Cost

£60 million

Current status

The much-acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid has been chosen to design the Riverside Museum. The next stage of the project will be to invite construction tenders. Start on site for the project is scheduled for 2007.
