Modern Apprentice scheme is long term success

20 Feb 2013

West Dunbartonshire Council has welcomed new figures that show that 92% of Modern Apprentices are still in employment six months after they graduate.

The Scottish Government information shows that Modern Apprenticeships lead to longer term employment, greater confidence and improved job prospects for young people.

The news reinforces the reasons behind the Council's increased commitment to the Modern Apprentice scheme which this year alone has seen 168 places created.
Other key findings from the report include:
  • 87 per cent who completed their MA were satisfied with their training
  • 80 per cent felt more confident in their abilities
  • 68 per cent felt they had better long term prospects
  • 67 per cent had moved into a post with increased responsibilities or with improved pay.
Level 2 Modern Apprenticeships are enhanced work based training placements that typically last for nine months, although Civil Engineering (Roads) Modern Apprenticeships last for 18 months.  A Level 3 Modern Apprenticeship takes between 2 - 4 years to complete depending on the vocational area.
West Dunbartonshire took on 110 extra Modern Apprentices in 2012/13 than in previous years, and this number will grow even further in the coming years with a further 70 Level 2 Modern Apprenticeships being advertised in May this year.
