The Hydro will be in the top five busiest indoor entertainment arenas in the world alongside such iconic venues as Madison Square Gardens in New York and The O2 in London.
Scotland's national arena, The Hydro, is taking shape on the
banks of the River Clyde. When it opens SECC's newest venue will
play host to national and international artists and bands, as well
as attracting major comedy stars and sporting events.
Once complete The Hydro will also become a new landmark on
Glasgow's skyline. Modelled on Greek and Roman amphitheatres,
the 45m tall building, with its distinctive silver dome, will stand
higher than the neighbouring Armadillo. Translucent materials used
in the facade will cause the building to appear to glow at
night.
Due to be completed in autumn 2013, the £125m project is set to be
a major venue for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, with the gymnastics
and netball competitions taking place in the arena.
Commenting on the progress a spokesperson for SECC said, "The
next few months will be a very significant time as the build
reaches full height and each one of the 16 roof segments are
plugged in to the central connecting roof structure. Major progress
has already been made on the steel work and concrete over the last
year, and by the end of the year the first seats will be put in
place. It's going to be a world class building: inside, all
12,000 seats will have outstanding viewing angles to the stage;
outside, the distinctive amphitheatre shape and futuristic
materials will make a strong statement alongside the other
contemporary buildings which now characterise this stretch of the
Clyde."
AEG Facilities, one of the top entertainment and sports companies
in the world, which brings performers to London's 02, has been
appointed "sponsorship partners". When the Hydro opens AEG bosses
will also bring the same acts it books for London to Glasgow.
Scottish Hydro has committed to invest £1.5 million per year
over the next ten years in the venue. The Scottish company, which
has been supplying energy to the nation's homes and businesses
since 1947, is proud to be investing in Scotland's cultural
heritage and will in turn provide a high profile association with
live entertainment, bringing real benefits for customers.
The Hydro is also expected to attract one million visitors each
year with predictions that the venue will generate more than £130m
a year for Glasgow.
