sports: Gymnastics, Boxing, Judo, Netball, Wrestling and
Weightlifting/ Powerlifting. It will also be the home of the
International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre.
Opened in 1985, the SECC is located on the banks of the River Clyde
and is one of Scotland's most visited venues. The precinct, which
already boasts the large-scale SECC Exhibition Halls and the famous
Clyde Auditorium (known as the 'Armadillo' due to its overlapping,
shell-like structure), will now also see the addition of The
Hydro.
Due to open in 2013 and capable of seating 12,500 spectators, the
Hydro will host the Gymnastics (Artistic and Rhythmic) and Netball
(finals) competitions. The internationally-renowned architect Sir
Norman Foster has ensured that its amphitheatre-style arena will
house a full Olympic-sized gymnastics layout.
The Clyde Auditorium, opened in 1997, will showcase the
Weightlifting/ Powerlifting competitions, while the SECC's main
exhibition halls will host Boxing, Judo, Netball (preliminaries)
and Wrestling. The Halls will also serve as a media hub for the
press, the International Broadcast Centre to be accommodated in a
temporary building in the adjacent parking area.
The development of the SECC precinct is a key part of Glasgow's
plans for the regeneration of the Clyde Riverside.
The SECC campus already includes the SECC Exhibition Halls and
the Clyde Auditorium. During 2013 The Hydro will open, providing a
12,000 seater arena.
All these facilities will be used to the full as the
Commonwealth Games attracts the attention of the World in 2014.
