Supermarket giant Tesco has been given the go-ahead to build a massive £30 million superstore on the banks of the Clyde at Glasgow Harbour. Plans for a mixed use development have also been agreed at Beith Street in Partick.
The new store, which will be part of the Glasgow Harbour
development, means plans for a controversial Tesco supermarket in
Partick will be scrapped.
Tesco say the store will create around 500 new jobs, with up to
half of them going to the long term unemployed. The store will be
developed on a site near the Thornwood roundabout at the west end
of Glasgow Harbour
Earlier plans to build a superstore and 650 student flats in Beith
Street caused a storm of protest in the area.
However the development, which became known as Tesco Town, got
planning consent after a public inquiry.
But the city council's decision to allow the firm to build a
massive Tesco Extra beside the river walkway means the Partick
store will not now go ahead.
Instead councillors have agreed in principle that the Beith Street
site, near the bottom of Byres Road, is suitable for flats,
businesses, shops and a cafe/bar.
