Learners explore the differences between, and the uses for, signs
and symbols used and cognitive skills are developed through asking
questions and sourcing answers through research. Learners research
the symbolism used by the six main world religions and produce a
presentation or display of the information that they have gathered
about how this information/knowledge is useful in developing
knowledge and understanding of different beliefs and cultures found
in society. The project could easily be adapted to explore various
symbols found in just one religious tradition.
Broad Outcomes of learning
• Subject knowledge gained and enhanced: values and beliefs of
religious traditions represented by symbols used by religious
traditions
• Developed employability skills: sourcing, analysing and
presenting
• Confidence of working independently from teacher-led lessons
demonstrated by following instructions and responding
appropriately
• Pupils take responsibility for their learning through making
decisions by identifying and obtaining only relevant
information
Relevance to curriculum
• Demonstrates enterprising learning and teaching approaches by
encouraging independent learning and developing research
skills
• Promotes the purposes of the four capacities for Curriculum for
Excellence
