Description
Clyde Fastlink is a new mass transit system for Glasgow and the surrounding area. The first two phases have been planned out in detail by Glasgow City Council. Phase 1 will run from Central Station to the SECC, with Phase 2 extending this route to Glasgow Harbour. Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) is currently assessing its suitability for various routes including serving the new South Glasgow Hospital, Renfrew and Braehead via the Clyde Arc, Pacific Quay and Govan.
The phase 1 route will start from Argyle Street at Central Station, running along the river bank to Finnieston, around the SECC, along Yorkhill Quay and terminating at the western end of Castlebank Street, the system will provide a dedicated bus route, offering a tram-like experience.
The vehicles will be segregated from other traffic over the majority of the 6km route, allowing uninterrupted progress even at peak times. The route will operate only high specification modern articulated buses with 11 halt locations approximately 0.5km apart.
Cost
The capital cost for phase 1 and 2 is expected to be around £42 million.
Current status
Planning approval was granted in July 2006 and funding applications are in progress.
A proposed third and fourth phase to Clydebank and Renfrew is the subject of discussions on design funding.
Timescale
Subject to funding decisions phase 1 and 2 due to be operational 2008 and/or 2009.
