Location

Glasgow City Centre, Merchant City

Address

The Briggait, 141 Bridgegate , Glasgow, G1 5HZ

Type

Current

Description

A former fish market, the Briggait was redeveloped into a shopping centre in the 1980s but has been lying predominantly empty since.

The Wasps Trust, in partnership with Wasps Artists’ Studios and Glasgow Sculpture Studios, are redeveloping the Briggait into world-class studios and sculpture workshops for 200 visual artists, an IT and education suite, and exhibition / project space for the general public.

The project is part of a wider scheme by Glasgow City Council called ‘Housing the Visual Arts in the Merchant City’. This is a new initiative designed to develop the Merchant City into a successful arts quarter. Eleven arts organisations – a mixture of artists’ studios, galleries, print, sculpture, new media and photographic workshops – will be housed in two new arts buildings: King Street North block and the Briggait.

Cost

£4,948,100

Current status

The Wasps Trust is currently fundraising for the project and to date £3.8 million has been earmarked from Glasgow City Council, Scottish Arts Council, Capital Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland and loan finance. Fundraising for the remaining amount is ongoing. Award-winning Dundee based architects, Nicoll Russell Studios have been appointed to redevelop the Grade A listed property.

Timescale

The development is expected to be completed by 2008.
