Description:
The proposal comprises the conservation and development of the
'A' listed remains of the former Caledonia Road Church. Built in
1857, the church has been vacant since 1962.
The project aims to secure the future of the premises with uses
comprising gallery space, study area, licensed café / bar, office
space and internal courtyard, all at ground floor level. In
addition, an extension to the north of the site will provide a
gallery, meeting rooms, studios, ancillary spaces and 10 serviced
apartments.
The entire project will be owned and managed by the Alexander
Thomson Society. The current owner of the former church, Glasgow
City Council, has provide grant funding of around £510,000 to date,
enabling the design team to complete all work associated with the
planning and listed building applications, and the preparation and
submission of a building warrant application.
The overall value of the construction work is estimated at £4.5M
and funding for the remaining stages is being sought. An important
element if this is a public appeal, launched in February 2010, for
£500,000 for the first stage consolidation of the church.
Planning and listed building consent granted 2009.
Plan to commence construction 2011.
