The Riverside Museum: Scotland’s Museum of Transport and Travel, has been announced as European Museum of the Year 2013.
The European Museum Forum (EMF) awarded the Riverside
Museum with the prestigious European Museum of the Year Award
(EMYA) 2013 at a special award ceremony on 18 May 2013.
This year the EMF Annual Assembly and the Awards Ceremony was
hosted by the Gallo Romans Museum in Tongeren in Belgium, EMYA
Winner in 2011. More than 150 people came together in a three day
event celebrating innovation and public quality in museums across
Europe. The event culminated in a prestigious Awards Ceremony in
the beautiful Basilica in Tongeren on 18 May, coinciding with
International Museum Day 2013.
The prestigious award is presented to museums which have been
built or extensively refurbished within the previous three
years.
The £74m Riverside Museum, on the banks of the River Clyde, opened
in June 2011 and showcase the city's transport, shipbuilding and
engineering heritage.
It was designed by award-winning architect Zaha Hadid.

The Riverside Museum demonstrates brilliantly how a specialist
transport collection can renew its relevance through active
engagement with wider social and universal issues. The EMYA 2013
Judging Panel agreed unanimously that the museum fulfils the EMYA
criteria of 'public quality' at the highest level.
The main prizes were given out by Joke Schauvliege, Flemish
Minister of Environment, Nature and culture and by Igor Philtjens,
Vice Governor of the Province of Limburg. Vice Governor Igor

added value of our efforts. This event is an ideal occasion to put
our ambitions in the spotlight all over Europe".
