Description

Renfrewshire Council intend to promote a flood prevention scheme in accordance with the Flood Prevention (Scotland) Act 1961.

The proposed works will comprise an extensive range of developments including 715 linear metres of earth bunding between the Scottish Water sewage pumping station off North Lodge Road and Meadowside Street/Neil Street.

In addition, ramping of Ferry Road to the north of the junction with King’s Inch Road will be introduced to provide initial flood protection and halt progress of flood waters into premises surrounding Canal Street and the town centre.

Further flood protection is proposed through the installation of demountable flood barriers above the ramping in Ferry Road. Walls are proposed for the Ferry Road ramping which will tie into the raised levels of the newly developed site to the north of King’s Inch Road, east of Ferry Road.

A new surface water drainage system is being considered throughout the northern part of Renfrew to help relieve pressure on the combined sewer system and ensure that surface water drainage is not compromised.

Meanwhile, a pumping station in the vicinity of Primrose Quay is also planned. This will ensure that the waters of the Mill Burn and surface water runoff in the northern part of Renfrew, will be discharged into the River Clyde at times of moderate or high river levels - decreasing flood risk from these sources.

Cost

Approx £5.5 million

Current status

Renfrewshire Council have received initial site investigation reports which required further site investigation and an amendment to the council’s outline scheme design.

Timescale

The formal consultation necessary under the Flood Prevention Act is expected to start in November 2006. Site work is expected to begin in September 2007 with work scheduled for completion by September 2008, assuming there is no requirement for a Public Local Inquiry.
