Newshot Island
Location
Clydebank & Erskine, Erskine
Address
Newshot Drive, Erskine
Description
Situated on the southern bank of the River Clyde, the local nature reserve at Newshot island provides a marked contrast to the activity on the banks to the north and east.
The site comprises about 73 hectares of inter-tidal mud, saline reed beds, grassland and scrub habitats. It is at the eastern end of the Inner Clyde Special Protection Area - a European nature conservation designation.
The site has been designated because of the important numbers of wintering wildfowl that it supports. Physical works on the site have been restricted to a path network and viewing platform on the western side of the reserve. This path network connects with the Erskine riverfront walkway.
Current status
The proposal to declare the area as a local nature reserve is being pursued.
