The Expo was an important platform to share news about regenation along the Clyde. The programme included presentations about major developments along the river that are transforming the area.
Since 2003 more than £2.5 billion has been invested by the
public & private sectors in the Clyde Waterfront area, creating
over 20,000 new jobs, 350,000 m2 of new commercial space and 10,000
new homes. A further £1 billion of investment is committed in the
next 2-3 years, giving Clyde Waterfront a real momentum.
These key achievements were the basis for Clyde Waterfront
presentations, which highlighted a number of particular
developments.
Clyde Waterfront case studies included
- Jim Fitzsimons, Chief Executive, Capella Group
- David Hastings, Executive Director, Strathleven Regeneration
Company
- Fraser Carlin, Head of Planning, Renfrewshire Council
Clyde Waterfront was also the focus for a final plenary session
at the end of the conference with the theme: Realising A River of
Opportunity - 21st Century Place Making.
£2.5 billion has been invested along the 13 miles of Clyde
Waterfront since 2003 almost equally by the public & private
sectors. resulting in the Clyde's economy becoming more diverse and
resilient, with real strengths in financial services, creative
industries, shipbuilding, tourism and leisure, as well as
regenerating some major brownfield sites as great places to live
e.g. Glasgow Harbour, Ferry Village and Castle Quay.
Another £1 billion in development via a few major public
projects such as the Scottish Hydro Arena, Central Govan Action
Plan and Southern General Hospital Campus, is helping to maintain
Clyde Waterfront's momentum and construction employment in the
area. However, £2 billion of mainly private sector office, hotel,
retail and residential projects, particularly in the city centre,
and the SECC/Pacific
Quay and Glasgow Harbour areas, are at various stages of the
planning process and could be developed with more funding and
occupiers. So how this potential be unlocked to realise the
achievable vision in the next 5-10 years of becoming a
'thriving and vibrant River Clyde, with people and communities at
its heart'?
Participants included:
Mike Edward, Development Director, Walker Group
Jim Fitzsimons, Chief Executive, Capella Group
Eleanor McAllister OBE, Managing Director, Clydebank re-built
Niall McGilp, Director, Goodman
Derek McCrindle, Director, Clyde Waterfront
With particular strengths in financial services, creative
industries, tourism and shipbuilding, the banks of Scotland's most
famous river are being transformed into a very attractive, highly
skilled, well connected and cost competitive location.
