Regatta on Clyde becomes first major event at Riverside

01 Jul 2011

The Clyde Waterfront Riverside Regatta is the first major event to be staged at Glasgow’s latest star attraction, The Riverside Museum. The Regatta on Saturday July 16 is a celebration of the River Clyde which has the new £74 million museum on its banks and will feature water displays and on shore activities for visitors.

The Clyde Waterfront Riverside Regatta will feature WaveScot wakeboarding demonstrations, rowing races featuring the Sea Cadets, a visiting Tall Ship the Glaciere of Liverpool, Powerboat rides and passenger vessel trips. The Loch Lomond Seaplane will also be part of the day's spectacular events, all set against the unforgettable backdrop of the Riverside Museum and The Tall Ship Glenlee.

Outside the Riverside Museum, there will be a variety of exhibitors including Clyde Waterfront, Galgael, the Royal Marines, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue and Cadburys.

Councillor George Redmond, the Chair of Glasgow Life said: "The Riverside Museum has been enormously popular since it opened last month and many visitors have been delighted by the close links it has to the River Clyde. The Clyde Waterfront Riverside Regatta will be a spectacular day of events on the Clyde which will add to the pleasure of a visit to the museum or The Tall Ship Glenlee."

Director of Clyde Waterfront Strategic Partnership, Derek McCrindle added "the Clyde has undergone a massive transformation in the last decade, with new businesses, residents and attractions locating here. The Riverside Museum is a fantastic example of this urban renaissance and we expect it will attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Clyde for the first time."

The new museum has been so busy that even with 100 more spaces than Kelvingrove, the car park has often been full but alternative parking is available at The Kelvin Hall and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum which are both a short walk from the Riverside Museum.

The museum is extremely well served with public transport links, including a new dedicated bus service from George Square, service 100, the reinstated ferry from Govan which links the Subway and bus routes - or alternatively, you can make the short walk from the Partick Interchange in less than ten minutes.

Parking charges at the Riverside Museum are £1 for 3 hours, at the Kelvin Hall (Bunhouse Road) it is £1 for 4 hours. Further information on public transport options can be found at www.glasgowmuseums.com/riverside
