River use in the future
The Clyde Waterfront project is working on strategies to further develop activity on the water. Three key areas are being worked on. The scale of activity is still to be decided.
- Increased leisure use – by creating more pontoon and slipway access points more pleasure craft will travel up the river to visit Glasgow. There may even be a small marina for people to keep their boats in the city.
- River buses and taxis – with more pontoons there is potential to develop new transport options on the river.
- Permanent moorings – at the moment The Ferry and the Glenlee are the only permanently moored vessels on the Clyde. Should there be more restaurants, bars, offices or homes on the river?
Pontoons are being planned for a few locations. See the following Clyde Waterfront web pages for more information.
Clydeport have developed the Rothesay Dock boatyard to service small boats.
Freight movement is likely to move further from Glasgow with Hunterston the most likely centre for major future investment by Clydeport.
The next major shipbuilding project will be the Future Aircraft Carriers.
Clydeport
Clydeport manages the operational harbours including King George V Dock and Rothesay Dock. They are also responsible for managing the safe use of the river from the Clyde Estuary to the Albert Bridge in the centre of Glasgow.
