Location

Glasgow City Centre, Custom House Quay

Address

Howard Street, Glasgow

Type

Current

Description

The proposed new building consists of ground and first floor retail spaces with a 230 bed hotel over.

The aim is to enclose the end of St.Enoch Square with a building of more appropriate mass and scale than the existing building.  The building will complete the link from Buchannan Street, through St.Enoch’s Square to join with the Clyde waterfront.

The site is located within the Central Conservation Area and backs onto the Custom House (listed category A) which fronts the riverside.  There are also a number of category B listed buildings along Dixon Street.

The design of the new building reflects this important location with a 7/8 storey building partly clad in honed limestone.

The lower stories have double height shopfront glazing providing an active presence onto St Enoch Square.  The external corners are glazed with balconies to provide vertical features marking the corner of Howard Street and Dixon Street.

It is intended that the hotel will be open in time for the Commonwealth Games.
