Description

A Heritage Lottery Fund grant has been earmarked for a project at Govan Cross. This money is part of HLF’s hugely successful Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) which funds the regeneration of conservation areas of a town or city which have particularly suffered from social and economic problems.

The grant will enable a partnership of local organisations, led by the City Council, together with the local community, to revitalise Govan Cross, making it a better place to live, work and visit. The scheme identifies a number of target projects including the Pearce Institute, a striking example of Edwardian architecture, gifted to the people of Govan in 1906 in memory of Sir William Pearce, Chairman of the Fairfield Shipbuilding Company and Govan's flamboyant first Member of Parliament.  The Pearce Institute's historic features will be repaired and restored, as will the buildings, shops and streets in the surrounding areas.

This project forms a crucial part of Glasgow City Council's Central Govan Action Plan and the wider regeneration of Govan.

Govan possesses a remarkable history dating back to its 5th-century ecclesiastical beginnings. In medieval times it was the headquarters of a kingdom stretching to Carlisle and more recently it became famous for shipbuilding. The late 20th century has not been kind to Govan with the decline of shipbuilding along the Clyde leading to widespread deprivation, unemployment and a drastic 80% reduction in the population between 1951 and the present.
