Flooding and flood defences

This lesson/project idea will develop a knowledge and understanding of flooding and flood prevention methods, by applying this knowledge in a real life context. Young people will work in 'flood defence' teams to design a flood defence that could be used in the Clyde.

Outcomes of learning

• Subject knowledge gained and enhanced
• Understanding of application of knowledge in a real life setting meeting needs of community and developing enterprising skills and attitudes (ACfE) through working on problems in a team, problem solving and self evaluation
• Problem solving skills enhanced through application in real context
• Pupils take responsibility for their learning through making decisions, working together, co-operating and developing employability skills

Relevance to curriculum

• Supports 5-14 Environmental Studies topic on 'Natural Disasters'
• Relevance of how flood defences work and how this knowledge is put into practice in real life situation in local area of Clyde
