Location
Glasgow City Centre, Custom House Quay
Description
Privately funded by Rodney Price, the Australian entrepreneur and designed by the Glasgow office of leading British architects RMJM, this is the first regeneration project to take place at Glasgow city centre’s waterfront.
This imaginative and high quality scheme will transform the Clyde Street waterfront from derelict housing and wasteland into a 50,000m² multi-use facility, comprising high-end designer retailers, 400 luxury flats, and a 24 hour promenade including stylish restaurants and café bars.
The development will enhance the city centre’s shopping facilities, encouraging locals and visitors to enjoy the river as an active part of the city centre. At the same time, it will transform Clyde Street into an attractive boulevard. The aim is to re-invent Glasgow’s image internationally as a ‘river city’ on a par with London and Paris.
Buchanan Wharf public square will be the hub of the development where the Buchanan Street promenade meets the riverfront. A floating pontoon will enable boats to moor, and attract floating bars and restaurants. The promenade will also double as an effective flood defence, the first constructed to protect the city centre.
