Community safety

The safety of our local communities is a vital element in the vision for Clyde Waterfront. To ensure safety and security issues are always taken into consideration, Strathclyde Police is an advisory member of the Clyde Waterfront Strategic Partnership Board.

One of the key ways that security can be safeguarded is through the design and quality of the built environment.  Strathclyde Police offer a free Architectural Liaison service.  Specially trained officers are available to offer advice on ‘designing out crime’ and can be consulted throughout the development process.

Developments that adhere to the recommendations made by these officers are eligible for a prestigious ‘Secured by Design’ award, which demonstrates to residents and businesses that police approved standards in safety and security have been achieved.  Several developments have already achieved Secured by Design accreditation.

A recent evaluation carried out by Caledonian Environment Centre showed that a door and window installation programme in Glasgow had a major impact on crime. Total housebreaking crime decreased by 26% in the SBD‐Area while attempted housebreaking decreased by 59% and theft by housebreaking decreased by 18%. All three decreases proved to be statistically significant.
