Education

People are at the heart of the strategy.

Common awareness and understanding of biodiversity is crucial to its conservation and its enjoyment. If people begin to understand and appreciate biodiversity, they will be encouraged to make decisions which value biodiversity, or to respond to incentives and controls which aim to protect it. This can influence individuals at all stages of life, and in making a range of decisions which affect biodiversity.

During the development of the Scottish Biodiversity Strategy, the Steering Group realised that interpretation, communication and education (ICE) are crucial cross-cutting issues requiring a special approach.

People learn about biodiversity in many different ways, from observing the wildlife around them, to formal education, to reading a magazine. Understanding biodiversity results in better informed decisions, increased levels of commitment to caring for biodiversity and an appreciation of how the biodiversity surrounding us adds value to our lives.
