Attracting hotels to the city

Hotel accommodation in Glasgow has grown dramatically in recent years, but further increases are required to support planned developments in tourism.

Recent growth in hotel accommodation

  • The number of visitor beds has increased 40% in six years
  • There are 8,049 hotel bedrooms within a 10-mile radius of the city centre
  • Total bedroom stock for the Greater Glasgow & Clyde Valley area (hotels, guest houses, B&Bs, self catering and university halls of residence) is now approaching 19,000
  • Occupancy of Glasgow hotels rose to an average of 74% in 2006, compared to 71.5% in 2005, the highest since records began seven years ago
  • 2 new hotels are under construction, Sleep Inn and Etap
  • Planning is in progress for another 10 hotels:  Travelodge at Braehead, Pacific Quay, Clyde Street, Central Quay, SECC, Broomielaw, Glasgow Harbour, Finnieston Street, the Argyle International and Jamaica Street
  • Two established hotels are planning major expansions - City Inn and Holiday Inn.  There are more opportunities and Glasgow City Marketing Bureau is working with SDI to bring key operators to the city

Clyde Waterfront is a strategic partnership of the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise, Glasgow City Council, Renfrewshire Council and West Dunbartonshire Council.
