A vision for the future
Glasgow is well placed for continued growth in employment. Its key industries are all predicted to do well.
The City Plan aims to build on the increase in employment that Glasgow has seen in recent years. Most of this increase has been generated by the service sector. Employment forecasts for the next ten years highlight the following sectors as providing most job opportunities:
- financial and business services
- public services
- hotel, retail and leisure activities.
New industries such as creative industries, life sciences and renewable energy are also thought to have good prospects for jobs.
Even certain industries, such as shipbuilding, which have been in decline, will have good job opportunities. These jobs will be created by the need to replace workers who leave employment.
Futureskills Scotland has also recently published information on what it thinks work will look like in the future.
- There will be around 100,000 job opportunities each year in Scotland between 2007 and 2017
- More people in Scotland will be educated to degree level and above – there will be fewer with no qualifications. Those with low qualifications will continue to be at most risk in the labour market
